A NEW Greggs bakery has opened up in Rotherwas, not far away from the Hereford Times office, so we went along to try it out on opening day.

There was a pretty considerable queue when we arrived, with locals turning up en masse to get their fix of bakes, pastries, sausage rolls and more.

Whilst the inside of the shop was modern and spacious, certainly the biggest Greggs outlet I’ve ever been to, the lack of stock was noticeable. Of course, it was only their first day in operation, and we may have been a bit late to the party, but I was struck by how limited our options were.

Luckily, they brought out fresh pepperoni pizzas just as I approached the counter, so I was happy. The slice was cheesy, had plenty of pepperoni, and the tomato base was tangy and flavourful.

I was not alone in satisfying my fast-food itch, however, as I was joined by three of my Hereford Times colleagues.

Our audience and content editor, Charlotte Moreau, was somewhat mixed about her food.

She said: “I went for the old favourite, a sausage roll, along with the possibly healthier option of a sweet potato bhaji and rice salad.

“For me, the sausage roll was definitely the winner. A Legge’s sausage roll, which for me is the gold standard, it is not. But it was hot, with buttery, flaky pastry, and plenty of tasty filling. Definitely worth waiting for on a cooler day.

“The salad was passable, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get one again.”

Digital reporter Paul Rogers had a bit more of a positive take, saying: “Walking up, I was unsure of what to have, and that even continued as I went through the doors. As much as a bacon baguette was appealing, I decided to go for a steak bake, and of course a sausage roll.

“Both weren’t too hot, and the steak was the perfect texture. The sausage meat also went down a treat, and with it all washed down with a latte coffee, there were no complaints from me.”

Reporter Bridie Adams had very mixed opinions on her Greggs goodies.

“I usually have a chicken bake, but there weren’t any left which was very sad. Instead, I ordered a margarita pizza and a pumpkin spice latte which came in a meal deal for £3.80, quite good value,” she said.

OTHER NEWS:

“The pizza, topped with tomato sauce and cheese, was not fresh out the oven and had gone cold. It was a bland and doughy with not enough cheese.

“But my lunch ended on a high with the coffee. My pumpkin spice latte was autumn in a cup, with a nice flavour coming through and a perfect balance of coffee and milk. I usually get my pumpkin spice lattes from Starbucks, but at around half the price, the Greggs one is a budget-friendly alternative that I could happily sip every day.

“Overall, my Greggs meal was okay, but it didn’t blow me away.”
