TENS of thousands have been spent on bringing a block of toilets in a Herefordshire town up to scratch.

The toilets, in Leominster's Central Car Park, were closed for three months last year for "refurbishment and enhancement" works to take place, with the contract for the works awarded to Treasure & Son Ltd, minutes from Leominster Town Council said.

A tender had been published in May last year for the works, which included conversion from separate male, female, and accessible facilities to two unisex and baby changing units and the extension of the accessible unit and creation of a new service area.

The revamped toilets are unisex and include energy-saving adaptations such as solar panels and light tubes.

They were officially opened by the town's mayor in December, with the final invoice for the refurbishment, which came to a total of £44,351.68, ratified by the town council in March, according to recently published minutes.

Minutes from Leominster Town Council's January meeting said the additional work at the toilets was due to a fault in the design of the accessible cubicle.
