DOZENS of complaints have been made about smelly farms in Herefordshire.

The complaints have been revealed in a freedom of information request response from Herefordshire Council.

The request asked the council to provide details of all nuisance complaints relating to noise, odour, and dust that it received between 2019 and July 2023.

Among the complaints about farmers were 12 complaints about accumulations, which can be any accumulation or deposit of matter which can cause health problems or a nuisance, and 101 complaints about agricultural odours.

And it is not just farmers that have been complained about, with a whole range of other surprising complaints, including 23 complaints about sewage works odours, and two complaints about church bells or phones.

Animals have also been the subject of plenty of complaints, with the greatest number of complaints by far made about barking dogs, with a total of 834 complaints between 2019 and 2023.

Letters should not exceed 250 words and local issues take precedence.

Other animals and birds have also caused upset, with a total of 66 noise complaints made about them over the period.

But other figures might be surprising in other ways, with just 12 complaints made in the county about firework noise between 2019 and 2023, despite regular complaints on social media around Bonfire Night.

Nuisances causing a disturbance such as bonfires, noisy neighbours and pets, noise from commercial premises, industrial premises and car alarms, and more can be reported to Herefordshire Council.
