CONSTRUCTION is underway on a new café at a landmark Hereford building.

The Castle Green Pavilion is undergoing a transformation after it received £1.5 million funding from Stronger Hereford, a series of projects transforming the city thanks to a £22.4 million grant from the Government’s Towns Fund.

The grade II listed Georgian building has been run by the community interest company, Friends of Castle Green Group since 2018.

Friends of Castle Green have said that all the groundworks for the café are now up and nearly finished, and the glass for the building is expected to be fitted within the next few weeks, which they hope will “give a new sense to the building”.

Local contractors, Vision Building and Development, have also been helping to restore and revitalise the building.

Recent work has included exposing the Georgian portico, which is awaiting glazing, while the pediment above the portico has been reinstated with a lantern-glazed roof to allow light into the operational office the building will house.

The renovation aims to reflect the history of the building as well as turn it into a “sustainable community asset”.

The restored building, which has previously been used for community groups including youth drama and music lessons, will offer community meeting spaces and become a new home for Hereford Youth Canoe Centre.

The building is set to be completed and open by late this summer and will also be available to hire for individuals and groups.
