QUESTIONS have been raised after caravans were placed on a former traveller site in Herefordshire.

Minutes from the March meeting of Madley Parish Council revealed that a number of static caravans had been placed on the site, off Stoney Street, with various questions raised by members of the public and councillors at the meeting.

The site was previously used as an emergency stopover for travellers, the minutes said, but no traveller site is currently operated by Herefordshire Council in Madley.

The site is understood to be adjacent to the Madley Industrial Estate, and previously offered twenty travellers' pitches together with a brick warden's hut.

Permission to develop the site was granted with conditions in 2020.

The minutes said the parish council noted that the site would need a licence to operate and that the council would have a statement of fact from Herefordshire Council for their next meeting.

The chair also reiterated that the matter would be dealt with by Herefordshire Council, but that the parish council would represent local views.

"The chairman confirmed that there had been a number of comments and speculation on social media and any councillors commenting in their own name are doing so in a personal capacity," the minutes said.
