The UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) issued a yellow cold weather alert from January 6 to January 12.

The UKHSA said: "Impacts are possible across the health and social care sector, including increased demand for remote care services and possible impact on services. Maintaining indoor temperatures may become challenging for some.

"After a period of mild and unsettled weather, high pressure will build over the UK into the weekend and dominate into next week. A brisk easterly wind developing over the weekend will make it feel much colder.
