NEW toilets could be on the horizon for one Herefordshire town after one of its toilet blocks was sold off.

Finding a public loo is often a priority for visitors, especially after a long drive, but it isn't always an easy task.

But that could change in one Herefordshire town, minutes from a recent council meeting reveal.

The minutes from Bromyard Town Council's finance committee showed that councillors had proposed the provision of public toilets in the High Street and Market Square area of the town.

Bromyard previously had a set of public toilets in the town's Church Street, behind the market square, but these have been closed for several years.

The minutes revealed that while members agreed with the idea of providing further loos, there was a hitch.

Councillors said it was not within the gift of the town council and it was suggested that Herefordshire Council should be approached to provide such a facility as they had previously sold off the public toilet building at the eastern end of the town to a private buyer.

The town currently has one set of public toilets at the far end of the town, in the Tenbury Road car park. They were previously owned by Herefordshire Council but were transferred to the town council in 2016.

But they have closed on occasions over the years including when they have been hit by vandals, leaving the town with no open toilets for visitors to use.

More recently, there have been problems with drainage at the toilet blocks, and due to this and the need for repairs to other parts of the block, the council agreed to close the toilets and place portable toilets for visitors to use, a report submitted to the town's properties committee in November said.

It was also agreed by councillors earlier this year that the town's current toilets would be locked from 6pm and 8pm from April to September and 6pm to 6am during the winter.
