IT appears some farmers are already cutting kilometres of hedges, still in the nesting season for many birds.
While technically not illegal, it is an offence to destroy or disturb nesting birds without close prior observation to establish the absence of such – almost impossible.
However, farmers risk losing government payments if done without a derogation for specific crops unless for safety reasons such as visibility in small areas.

I suggest any activity be reported to RPA on 03000200301 as advised by the RSPB.
Early cutting exposes nests to predators and destroys food and insect habitat. The season to cut begins on September 1. As custodians of the countryside, please give our wildlife a chance.
