GARWAY Heritage Group received a communication this week from the senior planning officer at the directorate of economy, Herefordshire Council.

They would like our help to gather together a list of “places that are of heritage significance” in Herefordshire.

We have a building in Garway which is of heritage significance. It is the old Victorian School.

Built in 1877 by the Skenfrith School Board, a fine example of a Victorian board school. There are only three historic public buildings in Garway. They are the pub, the church and the Victorian school.

In the face of much local opposition to the demolition of the old school and supported by SAVE Britain’s Heritage, there was an appeal against this decision. Herefordshire Council embarked on an expensive legal battle to defend their decision right through to the Court of Appeal. Sadly, we lost our appeal.

How ironic! The same week that we hear that Herefordshire Council can facilitate the demolition of the Old School, we are asked to identify more interesting buildings.

It does make you wonder!!
