Some fog is likely to persist all day, the Met Office said, but many places will see this lifting into low cloud or clear by this afternoon.

Forecasters warned that the foggy conditions may cause travel delays this morning.

The warning, which came into force at 2am this morning, is due to lift at 11am today (November 29).

When is a fog warning issued?

The Met Office said warnings of dense fog are issued when visibility is expected to fall below 200 metres.

Severe disruption to transport occurs when the visibility falls below 50 metres.

What does the warning mean for me?

The Met Office warns that people should avoid travel if possible when a fog warning is in force.

If you have to drive, keep an eye on your speed and use dipped headlights, the Met Office said, using fog lights when necessary and remembering to turn them off when visibility improves.

Watch out for freezing fog which is made of water droplets that freeze on contact with objects such as the pavement, roads, or cars, as it can quickly form a layer of ice.
