AN ATTACKER has been ordered to carry out unpaid work after grabbing a woman by the throat and headbutting her.

Gelu Axinte appeared before magistrates in Hereford for sentencing after entering a guilty plea at a previous hearing.

Prosecutor Elizabeth Blacklock said Axinte had been seen by members of the public headbutting a woman and grabbing her by the throat outside a home in Hereford's Whitecross Road on May 21.

She said it was a domestic matter and that the victim was not supportive of a prosecution, and that the prosecution case relied on evidence from members of the public who had witnessed the incident.

"Police saw she was left with a lump to her forehead, but there was no mark on her neck," Miss Blacklock said.

The court heard that two of the witnesses had said he had headbutted the victim more than once, while one of the witnesses said he had done it twice.

The 45-year-old, who was unrepresented at the hearing, said he did not want to add anything.

Axinte, of Whitecross Road, Hereford, was handed a two-year community order with 240 hours of unpaid work and must pay costs of £185 and a £95 victim surcharge.
