HEREFORD Medical Group has announced a major change to how patients can order their medication.

From August 1, the medical group, which runs several surgeries in and around the city, said patients will no longer be able to request prescriptions via the phone.

The group said it was a "difficult decision" by partners, but it will ensure it can offer a "safe and efficient prescription service".

It said it was based on national guidance on safe ordering of medication, but admitted it could leave some patients facing difficulties.

Instead of ringing, patients will have to use the NHS app, an online form, by post or via pharmacies.

The group, which runs Station, South Wye and Quay House medical centres, as well as Bobblestock and Credenhill surgeries, said it did understand the decision would be "disappointing for some patients".

It added: "We understand that a very small number of patients will not be able to request medication in the ways listed above and that they will not have a family member, carer or friend who can order on their behalf.

"If you believe you are in this category please let a member of our prescription team know before August 1 and the surgery will ensure there are appropriate arrangements in place to ensure you can continue to order medication."

It also said: "The change will allow HMG time to accurately review and safely order medications for all patients."

Meanwhile, NHS prescription charges in England are to be frozen in the latest move by ministers to ease the cost-of-living crisis amid fears the squeeze on family incomes is damaging the Tories.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said the charges – which normally rise in line with inflation – will be held this year to “put money back in people’s pockets”.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said the freeze, which is the first for 12 years, will save patients £17 million.

It means the charge for a single prescription will remain at £9.35, while a three-month prescription prepayment certificate (PPC) stays at £30.25.

Twelve-month PPCs will remain at £108.10 and can be paid for in instalments.
