I READ with concern the plans for our coalition council to overhaul the licensing of taxis, which drivers will say will force 80 per cent of them to abandon the business.
Many people in rural areas rely upon taxis as an essential means of transport.
There are few if any buses available to them in outlying areas and so they have come to rely on the taxi service.

Indeed, for some who have access issues specially adapted taxis offer a real lifeline which could easily disappear if the new proposals are adopted.
Herefordshire is not like London and insisting on a knowledge test seems way over the top.
The financial cost of switching to electric vehicles will result in unaffordable costs for many drivers who will simply quit the business.
