A FARM in Herefordshire’s Golden Valley is looking to diversify as it asks if it can use four converted railway goods carriages as holiday lets.

John Whittall and his wife, who run Woodbury Farm in Moccas, want to install the four carriages for glamping.

In a design and access statement submitted to Herefordshire Council, it said the proposals represent the sustainable growth and expansion of an existing rural and agricultural business, currently focusing on cider apples and sheep.

“It is anticipated that the units would generate employment for a part-time employee to manage the glamping venture, as well as ad hoc employment of local tradesmen for installation and maintenance,” it said.

The glamping units would be typical of the 20th century goods wagons, and the applicants have been keen to address the environment in their plans, with solar lighting, composting toilet and modern insulating materials planned.

“The units will be aimed at couples, with each accommodating two persons,” the statement added.

OTHER NEWS:

“The converting of the carriages can, mostly, be performed using in-house skills, with outsourcing of specialised tasks taking place.

“Glamping units were selected as a viable diversification option considering the move towards ‘staycations’ and rural escapes.

“The units will harmonise with the existing farming activities and allow a reasonably modest financial outlay to commence the project – both important factors when assessing potential diversification ventures.”

Herefordshire Council has set a target date of April 27 to make a decision on the scheme, which also a change of use of the land and an extension of existing hardcore tracks for car parking.
