LUDLOW residents are demanding action to tackle dog fouling in the town centre.

Members of the 160-strong Town Centre Residents Association want something to be done about people who allow their dogs to foul streets, paths and recreation areas and fail to clean up.

They say that the problem is getting worse and is not only unpleasant but creates a health hazard and can damage the economy of the town by putting off tourists.

Some residents also say that while they know who the culprits are they are afraid to tackle them for fear of being a victim of reprisals.

Now the Residents Association is calling upon Ludlow Town Council and Shropshire Council to take more action to prevent the problem.

A call has been made for more disposal bins and plastic bags to be made available.

“This issue is a real problem and comes up at every single meeting that we hold,” said Robin Pote, chairman of the Residents Association.

“It seems to be less of a problem in places like Quality Square and the roads in the town centre.

“The problem seems to be at it greatest in the smaller roads and alleyways where people think they are not seen.”

Another resident who asked not to be named said that clearing up dog mess from the path in front of her home had become part of her daily routine.

“It is one thing to have to pick up litter and partially eaten sandwiches which is common place but to have to clear away a pile of dog mess every morning is stomach churning.”

She said that the problem seemed to have got worse and that this may have something to do with the winter when the days are short and people think that they are less likely to be seen.

“The worst time of day seems to be first thing in the morning when people get up and take their dogs for a walk,” she added.

“We are told to get evidence and take photographs but this is not easy and some people are scared to confront others.”

The Town Centre Residents say that one of the worst affected areas is in the vicinity of ‘Co-op corner’ at the end of Tower Street.

Concerns also relate to the health issues especially if children fall into dog mess as this can contain parasitic worms.

But there is also a worry about the impact upon the economy of the town.

“Ludlow is a tourist town and dog mess would be very off-putting for visitors,” added Robin Pote.

Another area where there have been problems in the past is the grass area adjacent to St Laurence Church.

People who allow their dogs to foul and fail to clean up the mess can face a fine of £75 but the issue is getting evidence and one option could involve the use of CCTV cameras.

Shropshire Council says that it is helping combat dog-fouling in Ludlow by working with Tidy Britain on a hard hitting campaign.

The campaign sets its sights on irresponsible dog owners, with recent research showing that dog walkers are more responsible and pick up after their dogs when they think they are being watched.

A poster displays a pair of luminous eyes with the phrase “We’re Watching You”, has been designed to light up at night in order to stay visible in the dark when dog walkers are most likely to feel hidden.

Offenders are liable for a Fixed Penalty Notice charge of £75.
