Tilda Swinton gives a career-best performance as a mother whose life is in ruins after her teenage son goes on a killing spree at his high school.

Adapted from Lionel Shriver’s best selling novel, the film tells the story of their life together in flashback – was she to blame? Or was he just born evil? Entertaining portrayal of Shakespeare as a lowly jobbing actor who agrees to take the credit for writing a run of hugely successful plays.

They have, however, been written by Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford, who daringly uses them to portray the royal court of Elizabeth I, seething with political intrigue, illicit romances and scheming noblemen, on the London stage.

An excellent cast includes Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, Derek Jacobi, Joely Richardson and David Thewlis.

One of the best of the much-loved Ealing comedies, this story is based on a real event. When a ship with a cargo of 50,000 cases of whisky goes aground, the locals on a remote Scottish island are delighted to take full advantage of the unexpected bounty.

An Englishman is sent to take command of the situation, but he soon finds out that the locals aren’t going to give up on all that free hooch without a fight. Starring Basil Radford, James Robertson Justice, Joan Greenwood and Gordon Jackson.
