Jos Buttler struck a magnificent century, leaving England defending 303 against Australia in the third one-day international at Sydney.
Buttler compiled a superb 100 not out in 83 deliveries, with Chris Woakes an inspired accomplice with 53no in just 36 balls.
Their transformative 113-run stand lifted England to 302 for six after a slow start from the top order on a slow SCG surface.
Mark Wood took the key wicket of Steve Smith (45) to leave Australia, 2-0 down in the five-match series, 181 for four after 34 overs.
England’s defence was hindered by the loss of Liam Plunkett, who pulled up with a hamstring injury in his second over and will be assessed on Monday.
