Worcestershire Rapids faced their first defeat of the 2026 Metro Bank One Day Cup as they went down by six wickets to a Will Luxton-inspired Yorkshire.
The Rapids, who had started the tournament unbeaten, struggled early on, finding themselves in a precarious position at 53-4.
However, young talents Dan Lategan and Henry Cullen stepped up, both scoring half-centuries to help their team recover.
Worcestershire batted first but quickly found themselves in trouble. Opener Brett Oliveira and wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick fell cheaply, both caught behind off the accurate bowling of Ben Coad.
Skipper Jake Libby tried to stabilize the innings, but was forced to depart for 12, leaving the team on the ropes.
Lategan remained, however, and went about his work with admirable composure, beginning to rebuild the innings alongside Cullen.
The pair added for the fifth wicket, with Lategan reaching 67 runs before miscuing a shot off spinner Dom Bess.
A fluent Cullen continued to impress, his inventive and creative knock proving ever more crucial in the Rapids’ ascent towards a par score of 250, but he was curtailed for 70 after mistiming a ramp shot.
As the innings progressed, the Rapids needed a late surge to post a competitive total.
Enter Matthew Waite, who provided just that with a brisk unbeaten 50 runs off just 40 balls, helping Worcestershire finish their innings at 230 runs.
Despite a disciplined bowling display from Yorkshire, the Rapids managed to set a challenging target.
In response, Yorkshire started strongly, with Will Luxton leading the charge. The Rapids did manage to claim a couple of early wickets, including that of Adam Lyth, thanks to a brilliant caught and bowled by Ben Gibbon.
However, Luxton was in fine form, scoring a match-winning 126 runs, effectively steering his team towards victory.
Despite some spirited bowling from Worcestershire, including a wicket from Beyers Swanepoel, Luxton's century proved too much to handle.
The Rapids fought hard, but Yorkshire reached their target in the 42nd over, sealing a six-wicket win and ending Worcestershire's unbeaten run in the tournament.
All eyes now turn to Friday, and a pivotal clash with high-flyers Middlesex at New Road, where the defending champions will need to bounce back in front of a packed crowd on Blue for Bakes Weekend.
