HEREFORDSHIRE jockey Hollie Doyle made more history when she became the first female jockey to win a Royal Ascot Group 1 winner.

The 26-year-old, from Ivington, is the record holder for having the most winners in a season by a female jockey.

Doyle rode 14-1 outsider Bradsell to victory in the King’s Stand Stakes as the Herefordshire jockey edged out favourite Highfield Princess.

The lightly raced colt hung to his left in the closing stages, hampering runner-up Highfield Princess as she tried to challenge.

However, the winning margin of a length was enough for the Ascot stewards to rubber-stamp the result.

“Coming to Royal Ascot and again having a winner on the first day is unbelievable,” said Doyle.

“I have a big book of rides but you play it down every year thinking if I got one I’d be doing well.

“It’s a great achievement and hopefully there will be plenty more ahead. You live for Group 1s. It’s a great day to win the King’s Stand for Archie and Victorious Racing.

Despite the stewards allowed the result to stand the Herefordshire jockey picked up a four-day ban for careless riding

“I’m sick of inquiries,” she said. “It’s hard to enjoy the win. I was a bit surprised with the ban.

“I switched my stick as soon as he hung left. I was trying to keep him straight. Thankfully we kept the race.”

Doyle brought home victory for trainer Archie Watson who added: “I think Hollie and I have had 200-odd winners together now; she’s been massive for my career and I hope vice versa.

“What I’ve always said about Hollie is that she is very consistent, she doesn’t make many mistakes. She knows the team she’s in, she loves the horses and she knows exactly how I want them ridden.

“For a yard like mine, to have one of the top five jockeys in the country, which she is, to ride our horses is just fantastic for us.”
