THE torrential rain at Malvern washed out five of the planned harness races at The Three Counties Show Malvern, which were hastily replaced by non-competitive demonstrations.

The veteran performer, Billsgoldandshake (Martin Roberts) doggedly frontran until the final turn, when 70-year-old Dave Shellam coolly produced the handsome roan Kentucky Joe to cruise clear, pursued by the useful Tuco (Bret Strickland).

Kentucky Joe was bred by Allensmore-based Lou Evans, and when her husband, Richard, proposed to sell the gelding last Spring, two of his sons, William and John, purchased the four year-old and vowed that he would win a race before the end of the season.

The brothers have trained the horse with the help of their mentor, Dave Shellam, and all were delighted with the victory in the demanding conditions on the tight track.

Next fixture: Allensmore, Sunday, 2pm.

Result. Going: Soft.
