TEENAGER Lee Hackett has sealed a Team GB spot for next month’s Karting World Championship in Germany.

The 18-year-old, who lives near Leominster, will be making his international bow after winning his maiden British Rental Kart Championship title.

Lee, who works at Herefordshire Raceway, secured the British title in torrential rain at the Grand Prix in Birmingham.

In a tense championship deciding race, Lee came fifth to finish four points ahead of rival Sean Brierley in the standings.

“It’s my first year in the championship and more than 150 drivers entered it,” said a triumphant Lee.

The championship consisted of six rounds — with five counting towards the final standings. Lee finished with 128 points — four more than Brierley.

Lee said he was delighted with his winner’s prize — a place at the Karting Indoor World Championships in Essen. “It’s the first time I will have competed overseas,” said Lee.

“The entry list is about 200 people and I will be racing everyday from Tuesday, July 24 to Saturday, July 28.

“I am looking forward to it. I will be part of a four-man TeamGB and I should be getting a new GB suit to wear for it.”
