SKIPPER Chris Boroughs hailed Herefordshire’s ‘excellent team performance’ after they recorded a five-wicket win over Cornwall at Truro.

All-rounder Bradley Wadlan (pictured) struck a quickfire unbeaten 74 to steer Herefordshire to their victory target of 242 in the closing stages of a hard-fought Minor Counties Championship clash.

Boroughs says he’s delighted with the character of his side - particularly after last month’s two-day disaster at Berkshire in the Western Division.

“It was important that we showed character, particularly after losing by an innings to Berkshire, and I am really proud of the team for their second win of the season,” said Boroughs, who hit a century against Cornwall.

Speaking yesterday (Wednesday) morning, Boroughs said: “In the end it looked like we cruised it, but it was a difficult chase and I don’t think Cornwall made a generous declaration.

There was a lot of turn in the pitch and Cornwall had two very good spinners. Bradley got dropped early on but when he got in, he took the game away from them.”

He added: “We had some excellent performances and it was a real team effort.”

Wadlan took the batting honours in Tuesday’s successful second-innings runchase after contributions from Dave Exall (41), Steve Adshead (39) and Boroughs (31).

But there were crucial displays from Freddie Eburah who took 4-78 in helping dismiss Cornwall for just 223 in the first innings.

Herefordshire slipped to 7-2 but they looked on course for a sizable first innings lead when Boroughs (113) and Exall (111) had steered the visitors to 244-2.

But the two centurions fell within five runs of each other and Herefordshire were bowled out for 305, with Andrew Libby bagging 6-58. Callum Stewart (4- 59) was Herefordshire’s most successful bowler in Cornwall’s second innings which was dominated by skipper Tom Sharp’s unbeaten 138.

Stewart dismissed veteran Keith Parsons, the former Somerset player, for a first-ball duck.

Cornwall declared after reaching 323-8 which left Herefordshire chasing 242 from around 55 overs on the final day.

Exall (41) and Ben Stebbings (30) got Herefordshire’s reply off to a solid start before they both fell with the total at 79.

There was still a lot of work to do when Wadlan arrived at the crease at 149-3 but his 57-ball knock, which contained 10 fours and a six, swept Herefordshire home.

Herefordshire face Wales at Eastnor in their final three-day championship match which starts on Sunday, August 21.
