Ross-on Wye duo Shaun Jones and Barry Payne had a busy time when Herefordshire men's bowlers held their county finals at Hereford Bowling Club.

The pair's success in reaching three finals led to the competition being split over two days.

The first final was the triples where Dan Palmer joined Jones and Payne to play Peter Evans, Brindley Powell and Paul Pritchard.

The Kington team had the perfect start in the rain when they picked up two three’s on the first two ends.

As the weather improved so did the Ross triple, winning nine of the next 10 ends to lead 17-9.

On the 13th end, Kington picked a one and immediately shorten the jack.

This change of tactic worked as they picked up the next four ends to reduce the gap to 17-14. On the last two ends each team picked up a one, resulting in an 18-15 win to the Ross triple.

The battle for the singles title was also a close affair with Colin Walters (Leominster) playing David Magness (Hereford).

Magness took an 11-3 lead after eight ends but Walters won the next five ends to take the score to 11-11.

On the 12th, the Leominster man picked a critical three to lead 15-12, and followed up with a two to make the score 17-12.

Magness battled away, picking up a three himself but Walters collected two twos to win 21-17.

The other singles of the day was the Under 25s which was played between Dan Palmer (Ross) and Luke Harwood (Ledbury).

Having played in the morning, Palmer settled more quickly into the game, winning seven of the first nine ends to lead 11-4.

Harwood then produced a good run, including a three, to reduce the score to 14-15.

But Palmer responded to the pressure with a three and two to lead 20-14 although Harwood continued to play well and picked up two singles.

On the 23rd end, Harwood put a shot on the jack but Palmer, with his last wood put up a running wood and cleanly took out Harwood’s wood to give him a victory at 21-16.

The rinks final was an all Ross affair with Jeremy Watkins and Nigel Brookes joining Jones and Payne against Dennis Gardner, Frank Garrett, John Hyde and Colin Barnes.

After four ends, Gardner’s rink led 4-2 and held shot on the fifth when Jones produced one of the best shots of the day to remove the only wood against him to score five.

After eight ends, the score was 7-8 to Jones' rink and they picked up the next two ends to lead 12-7.

Gardner’s rink continued to keep the game tight and after 14 ends they were down 11-14 only for the game to reach a turning point with Jones' rink winning the next three ends for seven shots. Despite picking up the next two ends, Gardner conceded on the 20th end to give Jones a 24-14 win.

On the Monday, Jones and Payne completed a successful finals day when they won their third title together, beating Brindley Powell and Paul Pritchard in the pairs final.

"Thanks go to Hereford Bowling Club for hosting all the finals, the umpires,Terry Knight, Don Pugh and Phil Bridges for supporting the competitions and Jeremy Watkins the county competition secretary for organising the timetable and arrangements," said county secretary Glyn Williams.
