CHRIS Woakes was playing cricket for Herefordshire four summers ago watched by a sparse crowd at Kington’s Recreation Ground.

But this morning he made an heroic debut for England - hitting the winning runs in a thrilling one-wicket victory over Australia.

Woakes struck a match-winning 19 not out to steer England to a last-ball victory.

The 21-year-old had earlier opened the bowling for England in the first Twenty20 international in front of 33,000 fans at Adelaide.

Woakes took the wicket of Australian skipper Cameron White and finished with 1-34 from four overs.

Woakes is in Australia for England’s one-day international series.

He has also been named in the Three Lions’ provisional 30- man squad for the ICC World Cup.
