A HEREFORDSHIRE football club are holding a junior six-a-side tournament later this month with the goal of improving their facilities for children.

Weobley Football Club have only basic changing facilities for their junior section.

The club want to raise money to boost their provision for children. They are organising a fun day and six-a-side tournament at their ground on Sunday, August 23.

The fun day will run from 10am to 5pm and there will be stalls, a barbecue and a raffle with prizes from local businesses.

“Our facilities are not at the standard of many other clubs that we regularly play against,” said Weobley’s child welfare officer Donna Conway.

“The children’s changing rooms are a portable building and we do not have any shower or toilet facilities at the ground or a suitable kitchen.

“We have to send players and spectators to the village to use the toilets which is far from ideal.”

“We are fund raising to improve the welfare facilities at Weobley and to establish a safer environment for all our players. We want to provide them with the basic training equipment that is required.”

Weobley had only two junior teams last season. However, they now run sides at under-9, u10, u11, u-13 and u-15 levels. There is also a senior team at the club.

“We are very eager to encourage children to be more active and to have fun together,” said Conway.

“Children at Weobley do not have to be outstanding at football. We like to concentrate on improving the areas that they may find difficult.

“We also have children at the club who have motor co-ordination difficulties and, although football is not their forte, they participate fully and enjoy playing and having fun.”

She said the club were also keen to sign players from the surrounding areas and villages.
