HEREFORDSHIRE’S round of the National under-18 competition took place at Leominster Bridge Street last Saturday.
The event is split into two sections, juniors (up to 15) and seniors (15-18).
The first part of the event is bowls skills and this is followed by a bowls competition.
The senior event was contested by Tom Churchill (Eastnor), Carla Biddle (Eardisland) and Greg Harris (Eastnor).
After the skills phase, Tom was just in the lead by one point over his cousin Greg.
Carla then showed she was not out of it by beating both Tom and Greg in the bowls.
In the final match Tom beat Greg to ensure he finished top with Carla edging out Greg for second place by just one point.
In the juniors, there was one outstanding performance and that was Dan Holmes of Ledbury Bowling Club.
In the skills section he scored twice as many points as any other competitor.
The battle for second place was very tight with Connor Diggins – Kingsland (25), Kate Williams – Ross-On-Wye (23) and James Ball – Bromyard (23).
Also performing well was Adam Horsfall (Hereford) and Tommy Holmes (Ledbury) with James Farmer (Bulmers) and James Thomas (Bromyard) gaining some useful experience.
In the junior bowls competition, Dan continued his winning ways with three straight wins including beating his brother Tommy who finished second in his group.
In Section ‘A’, Connor Diggins also managed three straight wins with James Ball finishing second.
The junior final was played between the two section winners with Dan coming out on top. He was therefore the winner of the Edwards Cup for the best performance on the day.
The cup and certificates were presented by Bob Murdoch, the Men’s County President, and John Durston the area co-ordinator for the competition.
