THE career of one of Hereford United’s most celebrated players is to be commemorated in a new book to be published later this year.

Constant Paine, by David Bull, will provide the full story of the long and distinguished career of Terry Paine MBE, who brought his Football League career to a close with three seasons at Edgar Street after more than 700 appearances for Southampton and 19 England caps.

Paine, a member of England’s 1966 World Cup winning squad, arrived at Edgar Street as John Sillett’s player-coach in 1974.

His immaculate passing and uncanny ability to place the ball on the head of Dixie McNeil from corners and free-kicks were key factors as Hereford won the old Division 3 championship.

Paine’s Edgar Street career is covered in three chapters of the new book and a number of his former team-mates, including McNeil, John Galley, Steve Emery, Tony Byrne and Roy Carter, as well as boss Sillett, give insights into the character and talent of the star midfielder.

Hereford fans have the opportunity to become subscribers to the new book. Anyone doing so will have their name and location - or that of a nominee - printed in the book which they can buy at £18 rather than the cover price of £19.95.

Postage is extra but books can be collected locally from Hereford’s historian Ron Parrott.

Anyone interested in subscribing should send a cheque for £18, payable to Paine Event, to Gary Chalk, 47 Doncaster Road, Eastleigh SO50 5QP, marking your order HUFC, by October 24.

Subscribers’ copies will be signed by Paine but anyone requiring additional wording should make this clear in the order.
