Wellington 2 Goodrich 0.

TWO goals from Will Perkins gave Wellington a comfortable win over 10-man Goodrich in the FTL Futbol West Midlands League Premier Division.

Perkins scored twice from free-kicks – the first on the stroke of half-time after Goodrich goalkeeper Ben Astley was penalised for carrying the ball outside his box.

The defender sealed the villagers’ triumph on the hour with a curling, left-footed free-kick which nestled in the top right-hand corner.

The goals were Perkins’ first of the season and the left-back was delighted with his contribution in firing Wellington to victory last Saturday.

Goodrich’s poor discipline was a reason for their downfall and they faced an uphill task after Aaron Simpson was sent-off within seconds of Perkins’ crucial second goal.

Simpson was cautioned for the foul on Wayne McNeil which allowed Perkins to curl the resulting free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards.

And the Wolverhampton club’s player was given his marching orders, less than a minute later, for dissent after comments to the referee.

Redditch-based referee John Harris had a busy match, booking four other Goodrich players and Wellington’s Mike Craig.

In contrast, Wellington’s experienced goalkeeper Marc Priday had a quiet afternoon and did not have to make a save.

Wellington had the better of the first half-an-hour and Matt Williams almost put the home side ahead in the sixth minute when he was played through.

However, the Wellington striker tried to dribble around Goodrich goalkeeper Astley who was quickly off his line and smothered the ball.

Goodrich skipper Daniel Forward made an excellent tackle on Williams in the 13th minute after a neat through-ball from Dale Withers.

And Forward collected a booking for squaring up to Williams nine minutes later after the Wellington striker went tumbling inside the area.

Wellington continued to look dangerous and Aaron Morgan shot into the side-netting from a narrow angle in the 27th minute after collecting a pass from Craig.

Goodrich gradually got into the match and started to threaten in the final 10 minutes of the first half.

Simpson delivered a powerful cross from the left and Wayne Hughes headed wide the visitors’ best chance of the half in the 42nd minute.

Wellington broke the deadlock a minute before the interval after the assistant referee ruled that Astley, when taking a punt down-field, had carried the ball outside his area.

The goalkeeper had been warned on three previous occasions by the official and he was made to pay when Perkins’ drilled free-kick took a deflection and flew into the bottom of the net.

Withers went close to doubling Wellington’s advantage six minutes into the second half when his goal-bound header from a Williams corner was nodded off the line by Scott Sandland.

Goodrich looked a poor side but seemed to improve after Perkins had scored Wellington’s second goal.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Goodrich battled and had plenty of possession in the final 15 minutes without creating a clear opening.

Wellington had further chances to score. Morgan and Wayne McNeil went close to extending the hosts’ lead from breakaways.

WELLINGTON manager Derek Williams said: “We didn’t play as well as we can do and we probably should have scored four or five. We have a young side at Wellington who are learning quickly. Our oldest player is Marc Priday, who is probably still the best goalkeeper in the county.”

TWO-goal hero Will Perkins said: “For the first goal, I was just trying to smash it as hard as I could and, luckily, it took a little deflection. I was very happy with the second free-kick – it went in nicely.

“Those were my first goals of the season and I will probably settle for two!”
