COOPER Hebbard hit an unbeaten century as Eastnor held their nerve to secure a five-wicket victory over Halesowen 3rd XI — a result that draws them within touching distance of second place in Worcestershire League Division 5.

Winning the toss and electing to field first on a sweltering afternoon could easily have backfired.

Early success came via Lucas Gatherer, who found enough movement to induce an edge from Ben Dunn.

But two spilled chances shortly after allowed Halesowen to rebuild and, more importantly, to settle into rhythm on a placid surface.

The partnership between youngster Mohammed Faraz and the experienced Shaz Gill was the cornerstone of the visitors' innings — a well-paced stand of 139 that highlighted the even nature of the pitch and the challenges of containing set batsmen on a quick outfield.

However, Eastnor’s increasing maturity — particularly from their younger players told as  Jonty Gatherer broke the stand with successive breakthroughs, removing Gill for a well-crafted 76 and Faraz shortly after for 53.

Kabir Singh followed up by dismissing the dangerous Thomas Williams, and from there, Eastnor chipped away methodically.

Regular wickets ensured Halesowen never quite accelerated to the extent they might have hoped, closing their 45 overs at 257-9.

The bowling honours with four young bowlers (Lucas Gatherer, Jonty Gatherer, Jasper Noonan and Kabir Singh) each taking two wickets.

Chasing 258, Eastnor began brightly, with Josh Emery scoring fluently in his 47.

However, a collapse to 56-3 reignited hopes in the Halesowen camp and reminded everyone of the ever-present uncertainties in a large chase.

The Australian all-rounder Hebbard rose to the moment with clarity of thought and execution.

Partnering with Lucas Gatherer — whose 45 was marked by patience and sound shot selection — the pair added 156 runs for the fourth wicket, a stand that broke the back of the chase.

When Gatherer fell, there was still work to be done. But Hebbard remained unflustered, and with Josh Element in support, Eastnor crossed the finish line in the 37th over — a composed and clinical pursuit.

Hebbard’s 123 not out, his fifth league 100 of the campaign, was both the foundation and the flourish of a fine innings.

The result leaves Eastnor just seven points behind second-placed Halesowen, with Harvington due to visit Castle Fields next.
