STRIKER Andy Williams feels that he can prove to be an asset on and off the pitch for Hereford this campaign.

The 38-year-old striker started his career as a youngster with Hereford United before going on to have a successful career in the Football League.

After returning to his boy-hood club in 2023, the striker scored 10 goals in 17 starts last season.

“The homecoming that I had in my mind over the last few years probably hasn't quite panned out,” said Williams to the club’s website.

“The first year I had an injury in the first half of the season and then came back strong. In the second season I was fully expecting us to kick on, and myself too, and get the promotion that we all wanted.

“And for me to be a prominent part of that, and it didn't quite transpire, we just missed out on the play-offs on the final day.

“My second half of the season wasn't quite as strong as the first half. Although I think at the time I found it frustrating at not getting regular game-time and not getting a bit of momentum building.

“I think it was as much as a me issue, as it was a thing between me and the manager. I understand that my age there has got to be a bit more give take.

“I think with 10 goals in 17 starts, I think I could have seen the picture a bit more. I think he (Caddis) respected that.

“I've got to take my age into consideration at the moment, although it hasn't actually affected me physically I don’t believe. It is something that everyone considers, so I’ve got to understand that a bit more.

“I was still the positive person around the place and that's why he (Caddis) was really keen to get me to stay for another year.

“I think I can have a lot to offer on and off the pitch to the group. I'm hoping I can go and do that again and even you can maybe take one step earlier this year.”

With Williams based in Hereford he says that the hardest part was narrowly missing the play-offs at his home club last season.

“It's where I'm from, so it's the biggest pull of all,” added Williams. “I've got two young boys now. I'm pretty safe to say that they are Hereford fans.

“They were as excited as me when I re-signed, they’ve fallen in love with the place like I did when I was a little boy.

“It's so nice to have that, but at the same time you don't want to them disappoint them, like we sort of did on the final day.”

Talking about signing Williams, said: “I am delighted to be working with such a top-standard driven professional in Andy.

“Andy is an important player at our football club both on and off the pitch and an example to any player at any level of how to conduct yourself as a person and a footballer.

“I still have huge belief in ‘Willo’ producing for us on the pitch as he has that natural instinct of scoring goals.

“Willo has showed a huge amount of gratitude to the football club and we are pleased to have him with us for another season.”
