A HEREFORDSHIRE squash player has been chosen to skipper England at a home nations masters event.

Tom Burton, from Hereford Squash Tennis & Racketball Centre, capped off a fine season by reaching the final of the British Nationals England Squash Masters over-65 event held in Nottingham.

In the final Burton lost to the defending champion Allen Barwise (Cumbria) 3-0 11-8 11-8 11-6.

Burton had beat his England colleague Nick Gollaglee (Somerset) in a very hard fought semi-final 3-2 and 11-8 in the final game.

During the season Burton played in five other events held around the country reaching two semi-finals and two finals.

The Hereford player amassed enough ranking points to finish in the top two and therefore earning automatic selection for the England team.

Burton’s consistent performances throughout the season were rewarded with the honour of becoming the England captain for the Masters over-65 Home Internationals.

“It’s a huge honour to represent my country again at a sport I’ve played for over 40 years, being asked to captain the team is off the scale,” said Burton.

“I’m really looking forward to leading the team in April when we play Scotland, Ireland & Wales.”
