SCHOOLS from across Herefordshire were presented with their School Games Mark awards as part of a government scheme.

Organised by Stride Active and hosted at Whitecross School, headteachers, PE Coordinators and pupils were invited to celebrate their School Games Mark success.

The School Games Mark is a government led awards scheme launched in 2012, rewarding schools for their commitment to the development of PE, school sport and physical activity, both in their school and into the community.

Participating in the process allows schools to evaluate their PE provision and assists them in developing an action plan for future progress.

Schools apply for the award and are required to submit evidence against a number of topics including how many young people in the school are engaged in sporting activity and how many local links the school has with clubs.

Applications are graded against a set of criteria which determines whether schools have achieved bronze, silver, gold or platinum level.

A total of 39 schools achieved the School Games Mark this year.

The seven schools who achieved the prestigious platinum award were: Cradley Primary School, Kingsland Primary School, Madley Primary School, Stoke Prior Primary School, Hampton Dene Primary School, Riverside Primary School and Much Birch Primary School.

Chair of the School Games County Alliance and headteacher of Whitecross, Mr Knapp, said: “We are delighted to celebrate the success of so many schools in Herefordshire for their ongoing commitment to PE, sport and physical activity.

“The School Games Mark demonstrates the breadth of opportunities that schools are giving to young people, allowing them to experience and enjoy physical activity.

“Physical activity plays such an important role in supporting young people’s physical health, mental wellbeing and skill development and events such as this are so important to recognise what schools can do as a collective, to ensure young people in Herefordshire grow up to be active, healthy and happy.”

All schools are able to apply to the School Games Mark. Applications for the 2023/24 academic year will be open from May 1. For more information, contact your School Games organiser at: www.strideactive.org
