HEREFORD Rowling Club came away with a host of medals when competing in the British Rowing’s National Indoor Rowing Championships at the NEC in Birmingham.

Twelve members of the city club’s junior rowing squad took part in the national indoor competition which used rowing machines.

Attending the competition was not only rowing clubs and schools from all over the country, but also individuals and groups from gyms and other sports.

Competition was fierce with two world and three British records being broken on the day.

None of the Hereford squad, aged between 13 and 16 years old, had entered a national indoor event before.

There are two possible individual events a timed event and a 500-metre sprint.

Individual events were rowed in year groups and relays were all in the under-18 age category so the Hereford team were competing against people many years their senior. 

All the Hereford athletes finished in the top half of their events which was a massive achievement given the opposition.

The club also came home with four medals with Huw Pritchard coming away with gold in the Year 10 boys’ individual timed event, beating team-mate Jack Jones into silver.

Megan Panniers was another medal winner coming away with bronze in the Year 11 Girls’ individual timed event.

Huw Pritchard also came away with bronze in the Year 10 Boys 500-metre event.

Hereford Rowing Club’s mixed relay teams, including all their athletes aged 13 to 16, came seventh, eighth and 13th in the country in an event that was open to all competitors 18 years and younger.
