DESPITE dominating large spells of the second half Luctonians were punished for missing chances and found themselves on the wrong end of a 21-3 score-line at fellow top half side Redruth.

The visitors made the early running and after several phases of applied pressure, were rewarded with a Louis Silver penalty on six minutes to take a 0-3 lead.

Hpwever, the hosts would then get their first opportunities and were buoyed by a yellow card to Lucs’ hooker Jack Small.

Redruth scored immediately from a driving maul on 21 minutes, with fly half Fraser Honey converting for 7-3.

The Herefordshire men would see out the majority of the yellow card period in comfortable fashion and even looked like scoring, but for winger Charlie Grimes dropping the ball over the opposition line.

However, Redruth extended their lead on 30 minutes as a midfield break from first phase was capitalised on and Lewis Thomas went over for another converted score and 14-3.

Lucs looked set to cut the lead with Josh Watkins seemingly in under the posts but for a desperate last ditch tap tackle.

Moments later the hosts would be back inside the Lucs 22 where once again their clinical prowess shone and tighthead Jess Thompsett barged over under the posts for what would end up being the final points of the game on 38 minutes, another converted try and a 21-3 lead.

Lucs were staring down the barrel a little with that scoreline at the break and playing uphill in the second period, in front of a large vocal support at one of the tougher venues to play in the National Leagues.

However, Ryan Watkins’ side showed outstanding character if not accuracy, to completely dominate the second half in all but the scoreboard.

The Black and Whites would enter the Cornish hosts’ 22 on ten occasions in the second period, whilst Redruth barely got out of their own half.

However, a combination of gritty defence, poor handling skills and dreadful composure from the visitors meant the Herefordshire men came away empty handed.

The Kingsland side will look to bounce back in the next fixture against Barnstaple, at home on February 11.
