A DAN STONEMAN strike earned Westfields a first league victory of their Hellenic League Premier Division campaign with a 1-0 victory over Fairford Town 1-0.

The match, played in blistering temperatures with drinks breaks every 15 minutes, was a stop-start affair but Westfields won the tie with a 28th minute Stoneman goal who led the Fairford defence a merry dance throughout the game.

Stoneman was a constant threat for the visitors 0with his pacey runs down both wings as he interchanged at regular intervals.

Fields took the lead with a fine interchange of passes between Adam Wakley and Josh Hunt which saw Stoneman finish in style with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Phil Glover’s side then had a great chance to increase their lead when a similar passing movement put Josh Hunt through on goal but the striker fired wide of the upright.

After the break the visitors came more into the game and twice goalkeeper Ian Havard fielded long shots.

It looked like an equaliser was on the cards when Ross Langworthy was put through on goal but Havard again produced a fine full-length save to keep Westfields in front.

Glover’s side had a number of other chances when a Matt MacDonald free-kick cleared the bar. The hosts had to hang on at the death as Fairford came back into the game in search of an equaliser but both Joe Davies and skipper Sam Rawlings made timely tackles to secure the points.

After winning their opening league game Hereford Lads Club suffered a 4-1 away defeat at Longlevens.

Both goalkeepers were kept busy early in the tie with Henry Dyde seeing his lobbed effort saved while Steven Bell also made a smart stop.

The visitors were ahead on the 18th minute when Kiea Cowley continued his scoring form with a smart finish.

Longlevens equalised before going ahead before the break and netting two further goals in the second half with Lucas Price netting a brace.
