HEREFORDSHIRE darts star Jim Williams became the latest winner of a ProTour event in the Professional Darts Corporation after beating ‘Rapid’ Ricky Evans in the Players Championship.

The event held at the Barnsley Metronome saw Cardiff-born Williams defeat six players to reach the final, including world finalist Michael Smith, before beating Evans 8-6.

Williams missed 121 on double 18 to level up but with Evans unable to take 170, ‘The Quiff’ returned for double eight to level up.

Evans missed the chance to hold and was made to rue it as Williams took out double eight to make it 2-1. He extended that to 3-1.

Evans returned though for an 86 on the bull as a confidence booster to make it 3-2. Williams missed bull for a 124 and Evans hit double 10 to make it 3-3 and break back and was throwing for a 4-3 lead.

The players were level on six legs each before Williams edged ahead with a 12-dart leg.

Each player then missed a handful of darts at double before, in pub-style fashion on ‘madhouse’ double one, Williams claimed victory with an average of 89.92 – comfortably his worst of the tournament.

"I didn't feel any nerves all day until the last match darts," said the Welshman, speaking to the PDC’s official website.

"It wasn't a great way to win it but it is a good feeling. It's a very long day and I haven't played that much in the last three years really, so I had to battle through.

"To win it is great and hopefully now I feel like I belong and can kick on from here."

It is only his sixth event on the tour having moved from the British Darts Organisation (BDO) last year.

Williams regularly featured in the high-profile events in their tour, reaching the World Championship final before moving across to the PDC.

He became the sixth in an illustrious list o Welsh ProTour winners, including current world number one Gerwyn Price, former World Champion Richie Burnett, and current Premier League star Jonny Clayton.
