Kington Ladies Hockey Club got their season off to a perfect start with an 8-0 win over Whitchurch Saints 3s.

Having only been promoted to Premier 2 in the South Wales Hockey League at the end of the last season, the girls were expecting a tough first game.

Left-winger Sinny Price opened the scoring before captain Rachel Venables scored two more goals.

Right-winger Rachel Smith made it 4-0 at half-time.

Skipper Venables scored another goal before Price made runs down the left wing which resulted in three more goals.

Leominster men’s first team were beaten 6-1 at Clifton Robinsons with Barney Morgan scoring the only goal. The second team won 5-1 against Wotton under Edge third team with goals from Oli Smith (2), Maurice Hazelman (2) and Lewis Lavenia.

Leominster Ladies secured another three points with a 3-2 win away at Bristol.

Despite going behind early on Leominster’s game soon improved through determination and possession which soon lead to a very well taken goal, by Nina Emery to equalise 1-1.

Leominster continued to attack well, and with a direct ball through to Niav Fellows a brilliant reverse stick shot to make it a 2-1 lead for the away team.

Jemima Morgan also sent a great ball through to the top left corner for Jody Owen to cut in and have a one-on-one with the keeper, slotting it into the goal to take Leominster up to a 3-1 lead before half-time.

As expected, Bristol came back fighting after half time and attacked strongly.

Leominster’s defence was solid but Bristol did have an easy break away and scored, taking it to 3-2.

Bristol tried lots of options and were awarded a couple of penalty corners, but couldn’t put anything away.

It was a tense last 10 minutes but Leominster came away with three points.
