THOUSANDS of pupils took part in this year's Herefordshire Summer Virtual School Games.

Over 4,300 young people and 55 schools took part in the event funded by the National Lottery.

With the summer festival unable to take place, Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire did not want pupils to miss out, so instead brought the festival to schools.

On Wednesday, July 7, the Herefordshire Summer School Games commenced and schools were encouraged to recreate the summer festival of fun, hosting their school sports day, or switching up PE lessons to be part of a county-wide virtual festival.

In the virtual five-kilometre relay, Trinity Primary School were crowned the fastest school in Herefordshire, with Garway Primary School claiming the accolade over the 10km relay challenge. Ashperton Primary School topped the leaderboard for the ‘Hot Shots’ challenge, shooting the most hoops in 60 minutes.

The Games also saw two cross-curricular challenges, sponsored by Hoople Ltd: Design and T-shirt and Journalism. Unleashing her creative talent, Harriet from Weobley Primary School’s t-shirt design will be transformed into a new t-shirt for the School Games Mascot, Moovin’.

Stephen Brewster, chief executive officer at Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire said: “The Herefordshire School Games is a fantastic opportunity to provide meaningful experiences for young people participating in school sport.

"We have every confidence that the School Games will support our young people to embark upon a lifelong journey of being physically active.”
