A FORMER Hereford schoolboy is dreaming of earning an England rugby cap.

Josh McNally has been selected for the England squad to face Tests against the United States and Canada next month.

McNally was involved in England’s squad against the Barbarians in 2018 but is uncapped.

“I was really surprised as I thought that door had closed for me now,” said the lock who plays Premier League rugby for Bath.

“I’m 30 now and always thought these summer tours will be used for bringing some younger guys through and giving them a bit of experience.

“You have to take every opportunity as it comes. I’ve been in team camps before, but I feel a bit different now and I can try and push to make an inprint in this squad.

“All I can do is try and get better this summer, grow my own game to hopefully help me out in the future.

“The end goal is to get an international cap. It’s not just given to you so I’ve got to put a lot of hard work in this next few weeks.”

McNally grew up in Hereford area and attended Aylestone High School.

He learnt his trade playing for Luctonians during his childhood but it was not until joining the Royal Air Force that he made his mark on the sport joining the Elite Athlete Programme.

“I joined the Royal Air Force at 19 leaving Hereford and that’s where rugby took off, added McNally.

“That allowed me to get to where I am today.

"The RAF were the guys who pushed me and saw the potential for me to get to the professional game.

“They have supported me ever since and I’m now on a permanent sabbatical to allow me to play full-time rugby.

“Within that Elite Programme they support you with everything you need really.

“The sport played in the military is probably not too far off what is required at the top level.

“It’s probably bridging that gap and giving lads that opportunity to experience that."
