BRIMFIELD bowlers bowed out of the Bowls National Championships with their heads held high after losing a dramatic semi-final tie.

Played in Royal Leamington Spa, the Brimfield bowlers in the ‘Tony Allcock’ Mixed Double Rink lost out following an epic three hour battle against the eventual winners.

There was also thrills aplenty in the Bowls England quarter-finals when Brimfield and Little Hereford’s mixed rink teams up against a side from Driffield, in Yorkshire.

It went right down to the last end with skip Marian Wheatley coming in to secure the two shots needed for a one shot win.

Wheatley, Helen Skinner, Lester Bennett, Alec Tandler, Karen Tandler, Dave Evans, Howard Turberfield and Barbara Griffiths had beaten opponents from Herefordshire, Bristol, Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Oxford on the way to the finals of the Tony Allcock Trophy.

Hopes were high for the semi-final and Griffiths’ team looked comfortable on Rink 3, cruising into a 10 shots lead against Surrey-based side Camberley.

A nine shots swing covering both matches proved a game changer.

There was no time for a comeback and Brimfield bowed out with their heads held high, eventually conceding the game 33-39.
