LUCTONIANS Head Coach Ryan Watkins said that their bonus point 32-24 victory over Burton showed how much progress his players are making.

Watkins' side wrapped up their fourth try with an hour played allowing his side to reduce the gap to the top of the Midlands Premier to seven points, as their promotion rivals dropped points.

Despite Sam Boxhall kicking Lucs into an early lead the hosts replied with a try to give themselves a slender lead.

Josh Watkins replied with a brace of tries which put the visitors into a commanding 17-5 lead.

His first try came when a move out wide was halted and the ball was quickly moved back inside.

And then he managed to find the smallest of gaps in the defence to run over his second shortly afterwards.

Matthew Hackley then used his strength to shrug off a tackle to cross the whitewash and despite Burton replying before the break Lucs had a 24-17 half-time lead.

Sam Boxhall sealed the bonus point early in the second half finishing off a team try with a little dummy.

Boxhall followed that with a penalty and despite a converted try in reply Luctonians took a deserved win.

"It was a very good win as they were a really tough side," said Watkins.

"It was one of our better performances this season. Some of the attacking play was really good and the best I've seen for a while against a big and physical team.

"To get that fourth try and wrap up the game as we did shows the progress we are making as a team."

Luctonians host Derby this weekend at Mortimer Park and Watkins is aware that the visitors will pose a threat.

He added: "Our home form has been largely very good with just the one slip up.

"Hopefully we can get on top of Derby this weekend but that will be tough as they are a mid-table side and their results are getting better so we will have to be at the top of our game again."
