RISING cycling star Joshua Sandman added the Junior National 10-mile Championships to his growing list of honours with an emphatic ride in Scotland.

The 18-year-old clocked a winning time of 19 minutes and 26 seconds with an average speed of over 30 miles per hour over the course, which was enough for victory by 16 seconds from his closest rival.

“We got there a day early and a road the course in really nice weather but on the day of the race it was wet and windy,” said Sandman.

“It wasn’t too bad when I set off as the weather eased and I went into the event really confident in my own ability.

“It was a headwind out during the opening five miles and there was a slight incline which made it harder.

“Then on the way home it was a case of just nailing it, I didn’t look at my bike computer but just got into a zone and worked hard.”

The Team Backstedt Bike Performance rider has already set the National Competition record this season of 18 minutes and 16 seconds in better conditions earlier this summer.

However, he has been overlooked by British Cycling for their squad for the World Championships later this month despite doing everything to meet the qualification criteria.
