GUEST of honour at this year's Hereford Cathedral School speech day on Saturday will be school old boy and former Wales rugby captain Paul Thorburn.

Thorburn, who attended the school from 1974-1981, was the 100th Wales captain and still holds the record for the longest successful penalty kick in an international game - 70 yards and eight inches.

While Thorburn was a, relatively, recent Wales captain, the country's first, and another Cathedral School old boy, has also been honoured.

James Bevan, who was born in Australia, captained Wales in 1881 and a trophy bearing his name has been inaugurated to mark 100 years of rugby between the two countries.

Bevan, who was born in 1858, lost his parents at the age of seven and was sent back to Wales from where his father originated.

He attended the Cathedral School and went on to St John's College, Cambridge.

The school continues to follow the fortunes of the Lewis twins, James and Robert, who played for under-19 Wales teams at the 2006 World Cup in Dubai in the hope that one, or both, may follow in the tradition of former pupils graduating to the full Wales side.
