HUNDREDS of people saw the Rugby World Cup at Hereford Cathedral this morning.

The Webb Ellis Trophy was on display as part of a whistle-stop tour throughout the country.

Captains from Luctonians, Hereford, Ledbury, Bromyard, Greyhound and Ross all had their picture taken with the iconic cup in front of the Mappa Mundi, while various of activities took place on the Cathedral Close.

The trophy then stood in front of the Cathedral for members of the public to have their photo taken before RFU president Jason Leonard arrived in the city.

Leonard, who won the World Cup with England in 2003, said is proud about how well the tour has gone.

"There's such excitement and enjoyment of people taking part and being involved in events like this," he said.

"All the kids keep asking me is it the real World Cup and I say yes it is the real World Cup.

"It's an amazing event to be part of.

"I've never been here before and I was saying as I was driving up here, it's one of the most beautiful countryside I have ever seen.

"It's great that we can include as many people as possible in such a beautiful and iconic location as the cathedral."

Hereford Rugby Club chairman Ivan Powell, who helped co-ordinate the event, added that the day was an opportunity to bring the rugby community together.

"We had mini tag rugby all the way from under-7s to under-12s, there was a ladies side from Greyhound, a girls side from Bromyard and our Hereford Harriers wheelchair guys were here as well.

"Herefordshire is a small county but we are very proud of our grassroots rugby and today was an opportunity to celebrate that."

Full coverage and pictures will be in Thursday's Hereford Times.
