TRY-scoring sensation Drew Cheshire ‘is easily capable of playing Premiership rugby’, according to former Wales and Worcester Warriors scrum-half Andy Williams.

Williams coaches the 21-year at Luctonians and says players like Cheshire ‘don’t come along very often’.

The 21-year-old Luctonians winger has bagged three hat-tricks this season and is attracting the attention of Gloucester.

Cheshire, who lives in Hereford, is top of the National Two North charts with 23 tries.

Williams said: “Drew’s confidence has grown and I think he would be a credit to any Premiership side in the way he plays.

“He’s strong and got great speed and he could be a great signing for any club.

“I think he’s easily capable of playing Premiership rugby and I think the world would be his oyster.

“He’s a great kid as well – and players like him don’t come round very often.”

Cheshire is a former pupil at Whitecross School, where Nick Scott, who now plays for London Welsh, cut his rugby teeth.

Cheshire is a student in Cardiff and played for Hereford Rugby Club until he was 15 years old before joining Luctonians. He played rugby for Herefordshire but wasn’t successful with North Midlands trials and is taking his chances at Mortimer Park.

“I had a season with the first team at Luctonians but got injured and this is my first proper season,” said Cheshire, who is studying sports conditioning, rehab and massage.

“I started playing at fly-half and then in the centres and moved to the wing when I came out to Luctonians.

“My dad played rugby in Bristol and that’s why I started playing. I preferred playing rugby to football.”

He previously played youth football for Tupsley Pegasus and Phoenix.

“I have really enjoyed – it will be my best season.

“ I scored a few hat-tricks when I was much younger but that was against poor sides.

“I am working hard with all the boys and the coaching is great and the opportunities on the pitch.

“I didn’t score many tries last year – and I didn’t set a target at the beginning of the season.

“I just enjoy playing and want to do as well as I can.”

Cheshire said he would like to make the step up the rugby ladder.

“I would love to play at a higher level – I will wait and see what happens,” he said. “It means a lot having someone like Andy Williams saying good things about me.

“It shows that he has faith in me and believes in me and that’s what you need.

“The players around me help – they give me confidence and give me opportunities.

“I hope we get full points from our last two matches – and we finish with a bang.”
