KINGTON made progress in the Ken Smith Seniors Scratch Trophy with a narrow victory at Hawkstone Park in a match decided by the last pair winning one up.

After winning the home tie 2-, Kington's advantage was whittled away at Hawkstone by defeats to the pairings of Glyn Wictome and John Priday and Dave Price and Ron Davies-Jones, leaving the scores level with Rob Pritchard and George Smith still on the course.

The prospects were bright with the pair four up after six holes, but Hawkstone battled back to make the last few holes a real scramble. However, Pritchard and Smith held their nerve for a one up decision and an overall team victory of 3-2.

Mike Dyer won Kington's RAF Trophy, which had been postponed due to atrocious weather, on a countback from Dan Morris after both recorded nett 65s.

A countback was needed to decide all of the top three places in Leominster's stableford pairs competition with 48 points being the common denominator.

The winners were Brian Bengry and Ben Plant, while Paul Creasey - who had eagle two on the first - and Kevin Green were runners-up. Third place went to Dilwyn James and Mike Rusling.

Twenty-two players turned out for the Committee Cup, including secretary Les Green in his first game for a couple of years.

Jane Powles and Carol Rudd won the ladies' Salter Greensome Stableford in a close finish.

Hereford Municipal started their combined winter league and bi-monthly stableford competitions.

Gareth Hardistry won the stableford with an impressive 41 points, just beating Dean Samuel on countback, while Michael Steele was third on 40, one ahead of Tony Chambers.

Best lady was Averil Magee with 34 to finish 11th overall in the mixed stableford, two ahead of Christine Anning, 16th with 32.

Hardistry's winter league partner Jack Larking scored 34 and the pair share the lead with Samuel and Terry Robinson, 34, on 75 points. Mike Steele scored 40 points but was unlucky in that his partner John Davis was unable to play and so their combined score had to be 40.

There was some good scoring in Belmont's latest monthly medal.

Although conditions were foggy, there were clear winners of the Seniors Texas Scramble.
