AN Evesham man came out on top at the end of the first three-day Fishing Festival run by the Herefordshire and District Angling Association.

The match on the River Wye was run on a points system, each day, with the total at the end of the three days deciding the winner, who was Dave Harrle from Evesham, fishing for the Match Fishing Team.

"The river was normal height and running clear with good weather and each angler fished a new section each day to even things out, " said the association's Brian Powell.

Harrle had a total catch weight of 215lb from the three days with 114lb of dace and roach on day one, 60lb of chub on day two and a further 41lb of dace and roach on the final day, using a 4lb line, size 16 hook, with maggots and casters as bait and feed.

The match will be fished again next year but a week later on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. More information is available from Peter Goulding on 01432 357354.

Results: 1 Dave Harrle (Evesham) 215lb, 2 Andy Murray (Ebbw Vale) 212lb, 3 Steve Saddler (Gloucester) 82lb.
