EACH week, a leading figure from Hereford United will be giving his or her view on activities at Edgar Street.

Vice-chairman Grenville Smith sets the ball rolling.

WITH the season just over half-way, it’s now a big push towards the play-offs; so far it’s been a bit of a mixed bag.

We came out of the blocks like a train unbeaten in our first four games, then lost to one of our old foes, Newport County, and then we seemed to get bogged down with injuries.

I can’t remember when we have had such an unfortunate run of knocks which has kept Dodge extremely busy.

Losing our Football League status has hit us financially but I think the calibre of players Martin Foyle has brought in with what he has had to spend is admirable and I am sure we have some excellent assets in some of the younger players.

We had a great FA Cup run and it was nice to win the local derby against Shrewsbury, but oh what it would have meant to have beaten Cheltenham Town. But it wasn’t to be.

Over Christmas we shared the points with Kidderminster Harriers and then took a great point away at the leaders Grimsby Town.

So with three home games on the bounce I thought if we could win those then we would be right in the mix again.

After taking the lead in the first two minutes against Telford United it was disappointing not to kill the game off. You just knew we would be punished and we were in injury-time.

After that, to lose a two-goal lead against Alfreton Town on Saturday was doubly disappointing.

It is crucial that we win our home games and get the turnstiles ticking over and the crowds back up to where they should be.

I was disappointed that we had fewer than 1,500 against Telford and it was a bit flat in the boardroom after the game.

But that’s enough moaning - let’s look on the positive side.

What a wonderful asset the Starlite Rooms are and I’d like to give a big thank-you to all those who helped get it off the ground and to where it is today.

Through December and the new year there have been so many sell-out parties and everyone is raving about the venue.

There have been so many repeat bookings already.

It is now one of the best rooms in the city with its prime location and parking and what a move it was to take on Richard and Shirley when they finished at the police station.

The Starlite rooms has now become the Police canteen in the daytime and it’s nice to see my old colleagues spending their money at HUFC.

We are also holding popular monthly cabarets with tribute acts to Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly later this month.

We held our first highly successful Sportsman’s Evening at the club in October when Lee Sharpe was the guest speaker.

And now I think I have pulled off a real coup when former two-time World heavyweight champion Tim Witherspoon entertains us at the club on Friday, March 22. No doubt he will have some fascinating tales to tell.

Tim is stopping overnight and will be present at the Hyde game the next day when I hope he could add a bit of weight to the forward line.

Tickets are on sale at £40 which includes a three-course meal, a comedian and all the usual fun and games but get in quickly as they are selling fast.

I hope, by then, we will be well on the way up the league table.

Meanwhile, a Happy New Year to you all - have a good one.
