One of the stranger parts of lockdown for a sport lover like me, has been the lack of sport.

Weekends for me, as well as for millions up and down the country revolve around sport, so it has been strange having to find other things to fill the hours these last few weekends.

I have written previously about how bringing back sport prematurely could be dangerous, but it seems the powers that be have made arrangements which could keep players and staff safe.

What does need to be addressed, however, is what the fans do. When Liverpool inevitably win the league for instance, do we expect those thousands of fans to stay indoors to celebrate? Not a chance.

They will be out in the streets rightfully celebrating their first league title in 30 years.

What do we say to those fans? That they aren’t allowed to celebrate for fear of spreading the virus? I don’t envy the government or the police trying to enforce that.

All of this is slightly arbitrary anyway, as we still don’t know yet whether there will be a second spike in cases, especially seeing the worrying pictures from this weekend of thousands of people congregating at beaches and parks across the country.

If the number of deaths rises again, we will be back to square one and the hermit-like nightmare of the last few months will re-start, and sport will become an irrelevance.

The return of sport will bring back some semblance of normality in what is still a bizarre time to be alive. It might even give people a reason to stay indoors and gorge themselves on football rather than go and hang out in large groups, potentially spreading coronavirus.

I wrote a month or so ago how I was between two minds when it came to re-starting football: The rational part of my brain tells me we need to re-start and get the season finished while the irrational part says scrap the whole thing and keep Aston Villa in the Premier League for another season.

The way they have played, it could be the only thing keeping them up.

Whether now is the right time to bring back sport or not, the government has to give it the greenlight, such has been the catastrophe of the last two weeks and their handling of the lockdown.

In the end, we all just want some normality. Is that too much to ask?
