IT was heartwarming to see so many people turn out for the funeral of much-loved city bin man Garry Perkins, who sadly died earlier this week.

For so many people to stand in the pouring rain to say their goodbyes was a measure of how much he was loved and respected by his family, friends and colleagues.

Kevin Haines, refuse team supervisor for the city council, said all that needs to be said when he paid tribute to Mr Perkins for his approach to his job and life.

He said: "Garry was hard working, reliable and friendly. He always had a smile on his face and would do anything for anyone. He could fix anything, drive anything and nothing was too much for him.

“Garry was a proud straight-talking man and always stood up for what he believed was right. He never held back and always spoke his mind. He will be greatly missed by all his friends, colleagues and staff.

"Garry was one of the best and it was an absolute pleasure to have known him.”

People like Garry Perkins are unsung heroes, and we should treasure them.
